Why happy and comfortable wont get you there

Why happy and comfortable wont get you thereWhy happy and comfortable wont get you thereMy hands are still sweating. I recently saw the outstanding documentary Free Solo. It chronicles the stunning achievement of free soloist climber Alex Honnold, as he scales the famous El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.El Capitan is 3,200 feet of sheer granite, and Honnold climbs the whole thing in under four hours.Without ropes.I read Honnolds fascinating book, Alone on the Wall, but theres nothing like watching him in action on the big screen. The documentary shows his exhaustive preparations, practice runs, climbing journals, and more. It also examines the relationship he has with Sanni McCandless, his girlfriend.Dating a guy who risks his life climbing vertiginous walls of granite cant be easy. Not to mention Honnolds emotional remoteness, which helps him stay focused. An article in voanews.com quotes HonnoldSoloing always comes from some kind of particular mental space. And it has taken some effort to cultivate the right space for a relationship, the right space to still climb at a high level and just try to balance it.Theres a fascinating part in the documentary where Honnold contrasts McCandlesss desire to have a happy and comfortable life with his push for climbing excellence. He mentions how being comfortable doesnt lead to achievement.Clearly, Honnold would not be happy resting on his laurels, because excellence comes from serious effort, not settling into a life of leisure and comfort. In the documentary, we watch as Honnold and McCandless buy a new house and shop for refrigerators. Honnold previously embraced an ascetic life, living out of his van, shunning alcohol and red meat. While Honnolds fame brought endorsements and money, he remains largely unchanged. Still focused on the next climb. For Alex Honnold, settling into a conventional life wont do it for him. Happy and comfortable wont get him where he wants to go. He knows that to achieve greatness in climbing, he has to keep pushing. Keep training. Keep his eye on the next prize. The mystery of philanthropisch existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for. Fyodor DostoyevskyI doubt the cat volunteeredAlex Honnold isnt the only person to accomplish a dangerous challenge. Consider the life of Annie Edson Taylor. She welches born on October 24, 1838, in New York.A school teacher, Annie met David Taylor and they were married. The couple had one son, who sadly died in his infancy. Shortly after that, David passed away.Life does that sometimes. It completely destroys the happy and comfortable world you made for yourself. When that happens, what do you do?Do you give up? Throw in the towel? Or do you find a way forward? Rebuild and craft a new life? For Annie Taylor, she chose a bold, unorthodox way to move forward. After her husband died, she pursued various jobs and moved around. Concerned about finances for her later years, she decided to become the first person to ride over Niagara Falls in a barrel. She acquired a custom barrel made of oak and iron and cushioned the interior with a mattress. Then she tested the barrel by putting a cat inside and sending him over the waterfall.I doubt the cat volunteered. Thankfully, the cat survived and emerged from the barrel with only a small gash on his head.Wikipedia describes the rest of the storyOn October 24, 1901, her 63rd birthday, the barrel was put over the side of a rowboat, and Taylor climbed in, along with her lucky heart-shaped pillow. After screwing down the lid, friends used a bicycle tire pump to compress the air in the barrel. The hole used for this was plugged with a cork, and Taylor was set adrift near the American shore, south of Goat Island. The Niagara lake currents carried the barrel over the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, which has since been the site for all daredevil stunting at Niagara Falls. Rescuers reached her barrel shortly after the plunge. Taylor was discovered to be alive and relatively uninjured, except for a small gash on her head.Annie Taylor never achieved the financial success she hoped for. A corrupt manager took off with the barrel and some of her money. In her final years, she managed to craft a living. She posed for photographs with tourists at her souvenir stand and pursued a few other ventures. The point is, however unorthodox her plan, Annie Taylor didnt give up. There was a time when she had a happy and comfortable life, but it didnt last. So she lifted herself up, crafted a bold plan, and moved forward.Writer Margie Warrell, in an article for Forbes.com, notesOnly in giving up the security of the known can we create new opportunity, build capability, and grow influence. As we do, we expand the perimeter of our Courage Zone and our confidence to take on bigger challenges in the future.Warrell goes on to writeIn short, we must be willing to get comfortable with the discomfort involved with taking risks. We tend to live in our comfort zonesI li ve in Southern Nevada, in a Del Web type community of mostly retired folks. I enjoy coffee a few times a week with a bunch of guys who are older than me.I like hanging out with these men because they have many life lessons and wisdom to share. behauptung guys could simply enjoy their homes and play golf, but they do more than that. One guy goes off on mountain hikes that many young people would fail to accomplish. Another guy, who is 80 years old, rises early every day and lifts weights. These guys are intellectually curious, travel frequently, and keep pushing themselves. What Ive learned is that happy and comfortable isnt enough. Human beings thrive when we have challenges to tackle and goals to achieve. An article in timemanagementninja.com explains why happy and comfortable isnt enough. An excerptWe tend to live in our comfort zones. Most people rarely, if ever, venture outside of theirs. For most, its about going through the motions. It is a life of routine, slackness, and minimal ef fort.Yet, to reach new heights you have to push yourself. You have to do the work. And you have to test your limits. There is a caveat. Important as it is to have goals and focus on achievement, we also need periods of downtime. Space in our lives to rest, think, and renew our creativity and drive.Being happy and comfortable is fine. Its a state we all aspire to, and theres nothing wrong with enjoying the spoils of our efforts. But in reservierung to keep growing and achieving, we have to push ourselves. Sometimes, when we get too comfortable, we get lazy.Id much rather sink into my leather couch and get lost on my laptop than drive down to the gym for another, brutal workout with my trainer. But the couch and laptop wont help me achieve my fitness goals. How about you? Have you been seduced by a comfortable routine and happy status quo? Its easy to let this happen, because who wants to struggle in life? And yet, pursuing goals and doing hard things is what moves the needle. Its how we keep growing and achieving.Take a close look at your life. Are you a bit settled? Have you let happy and comfortable get in the way of becoming the person you really want to be?Focused effort leads to breakthroughsYou dont have to risk your life climbing mountains of sheer granite, or tumble over Niagara Falls in a barrel. But you do have to get off the couch, get out of your comfort zone, and chase your passions and dreams with renewed focus and determination. Do that, and watch your life transform for the better. Before you goIm John P. Weiss. I paint landscapes, draw cartoons and write about artful living. 9 Habits That Will Make You Happier in the Office

9 Habits That Will Make You Happier in the Office9 Habits That Will Make You Happier in the Office9 Habits That Will Make You Happier in the OfficeWho wouldnt want to take steps towards daily happiness?Habits are invisible yet surprisingly powerful. According to research done by Charles Duhigg, 4045 percent of what we do every day may feel like decisions, but are really habits done on autopilot. Those small choices, from what you eat for breakfast to the route you take to get to your office, define your daily experience. Successful professionals are deliberate about their work habits, and that intentionality can make a difference during the workday. Having good workplace habits is one of many ways to be happy at work. Can habits really make you happier in the office? We believe they can. Think of it as programming your autopilot in a way that sets you up for having mora energy, creativity, and focus. While rewiring habits can take time, its a worthwhile effort.1. Get enough sleepYes, thats right. Sleep is one of the ways to be happy at work. Based on data from the CDC, more than a third of U.S. adults arent getting enough sleep. National Sleep Foundation research echoes those findings About 40 percent of Americans are so drowsy and tired during the day that it interferes with their daily activities. Getting less than seven hours of sleep a night has been linked to a variety of health risks and diseases regardless of the effect it has on productivity. Companies are taking the lead on encouraging employees to get a full nights sleep with some even paying out a bonus for seven hours of sleep a night.Whether youre lucky to work for a company that will pay you to sleep or not, getting plenty of rest will set you up for a better day at the office. For many of us, that is easier said than done. Between the distractions of social media, favorite shows, and stress, many of us have difficulty getting to sleep on time. Experts recommend turning off digital devices and est ablishing a bedtime ritual to cue your mind and body for better sleep. Click here for more nighttime rituals you can do at home for deep, restful sleep.2. Pay attention to nutrition and hydrationThe fuel that you put in your body will determine the quality of your energy during the day. Is it any wonder that starting a day with a coffee and a donut will result in feeling sluggish within an hour?Much has been written about structuring nutrition for optimal performance. The reality is that you dont need an elaborate or restrictive diet to be at your best. Be sure to get a blend of slow-burning carbs, proteins, and fats in every meal or snack. Pay attention to how different foods make you feel if a pasta lunch makes you better suited for a nap under your desk than a client presentation, look at other options. Be sure to drink plenty of water during the day not just the kind that has been filtered through coffee beans. Limit your intake of sodas and remember that the vending machine i s not your friend. Those easy nutrition swaps can go a long way and are an easy way to be happy at work. 3. Cut out the mental clutterMental clarity is a precious commodity these days. ur brains process thousands of pieces of information, and if youre not careful, its easy to become overwhelmed and ineffective. The answer? Short of going away on an island retreat, become deliberate about the information that you allow in. Your brain on social media is not in its most productive and creative state, so resist the temptation to check out Instagram or Twitter on your break and take a walk instead. Its not only a good work habit, but its a great way to be more active. You may also consider adding a brief meditation practice to your daily routines. Many high performers, from Digg founder Kevin Rose to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, credit their daily meditation practice with helping them achieve their potential, manage stress, and improve productivity. As with nutrition, you will find that starti ng simple is the best way to keep making progress. A 10 or 15-minute daily practice is sufficient to create results, and there are many apps including Headspace and Calm that can help you get started.4. Keep your space organizedAre you greeted every morning with precarious stacks of mail and reports on your desk? Are there piles of paperwork on the floor that require a GPS to navigate a safe path to the file cabinet? The physical clutter may be making it difficult for you to concentrate and be productive. If your office looks like a paper factory just exploded inside, set aside a block of time to get it straightened out. File paperwork away for future reference and toss what is no longer relevant (if in doubt, scan it first). Create a system for dealing with incoming mail, emails, and reports so that you dont find yourself drowning in paperwork a month later. Its a good work habit to start now that will benefit you in the long run.Related 10 Apps to Get You Organized to Boost Your Jo b Search5. Take movement breaksHuman bodies are not made to sit at a computer for 10 hours straight. Getting active during your work day is a great work habit to implement in your day-to-day. Taking the time to physically move around can make a tremendous difference in your fatigue levels, boost your creativity, and minimize the aches and pains that are associated with office work.On the same note, if youre feeling frustrated or stuck, try stretching, going for a walk, or even jumping. Your mind is affected by what is happening with your body, explored in this article from Tony Robbins.6. Make a planAn intentional day feels very different from one where you spend your time chasing the latest fire drill. I recommend making an action list the day before it can do wonders for focusing your attention as you arrive in the morning. In an effort to limit procrastination, consider starting the day with the most challenging or demanding tasks. If something stays on your to-do list for month s at a time and you never seem to find the time to address it, consider eliminating or delegating that task.7. Get a big pictureNo matter where you work and what your daily responsibilities are, you chose this job for a reason. Maybe you believe in the companys mission and want to make a difference. Maybe you want to get the experience you need to move to the next stage in your career. Maybe you just want to pay the bills. No matter what your reason is, remember it. Staying focused on the big picture will put smaller bumps and inconveniences in proper perspective and give you the motivation to keep going.By the same token, if your reason is no longer speaking to you, consider that a cue to reflect on your next move. In my experience, it is better to leave an employer before you become so unmotivated and grudging that your attitude colors the experience and negatively impacts your options going forward.8. Take charge of your moneyNo matter what reasons you had for choosing this job, chances are money played some role in your decision. That reasoning does not make you greedy. The paycheck allows you to have your needs met and creates a safety net for the future.Be smart about money and you will be happier at work. There is an immense relief and a sense of accomplishment when the use of your paycheck is deeply intentional. Covering your immediate living expenses like paying rent and food bills is good, but think about future-oriented tools like IRAs, 401k accounts, healthcare plans, and savings as well.9. Steer away from toxic peopleThe last point on the list is one of the most important ways to be happy at work. Toxic people can make life at the office intolerable. If you can structure your days to minimize your interaction with people who thrive on confrontation, negativity, and bullying, do so. If you are reporting to one of those people, consider the long-term effect on your health and well-being and think through your options. In closing, pay attention to you r happiness level at work. No position is without its challenges and tough days, so take the focus away from any one day and instead track how you feel over the course of several weeks. Good work habits like a positive attitude and a healthy lifestyle can do a lot towards being more productive and having a better experience at work, but they wont overwrite a toxic work environment or a dead-end job. Misery in the office is optional, and if you sense that your excitement is waning and you are dreading going to work, it may be time to reassess what is happening.Click on the following link for more advice on how to get ahead.Thinking about looking for a new job? The four pillars of a more fulfilling career (and life)

The four pillars of a more fulfilling career (and life)The four pillars of a more fulfilling career (and life)You probably spend at least 50% of your waking hours at work, going to work, or thinking about work. And to be honest, that percentage is quite modest. For fruchtwein of us, work consumes almost 80% of our time and energy. Its on our minds all the time. Its leid a surprise that 1 out of 2 people is unhappy with their careers. We trade our precious time for frustration and money.Ever thought about that? Four years ago, I was also frustrated with my career. And because your job plays such an important role, my whole life felt like shit.Im not saying you should love your work at all times and that your career should be one big party. No, some days I also dont like my current career. But Im 100% comfortable with the way I spend my time. You see what Im getting at? A fulfilling career is about multiple factors that you must get right. Otherwise, you will end up hating your life. Spe cifically, Ive learned there are four pillars of a fulfilling career. Most of us only get one or two of these pillars right. But like you and I both know an unstable foundation does not last. If the foundation of a house requires four pillars, you cant get away with using only two.You might get away with three, but if you want to have a house that lasts for decades, its smart to use all pillars. And its the same for our careers. Here are the four pillars of a fulfilling career. How many of these pillars do you have in place?Pillar One CompensationHow much you earn at your job makes you feel valued- thats what compensation is about. Money is not about status or material things. When you do work thats valuable, you should be rewarded for that. Thats what I strive for.But at the same time, we need to remind ourselves to stay grounded. Chasing money for the sake of having more money never ends well. Learning how to manage your money is one of the most important things you can do for yours elf. When you can actually keep the money you make, youll feel better about your future. And when you feel better, you can do better work. That will help you to make more money.Pillar Two WorkWhen you always prioritize compensation over the type of work, you wont feel good about your career. And sometimes, people can go on for years doing work they hate so they can make enough money.I dont like that because I value time more than money. I want to make sure that all the hours Im putting in my work, I actually enjoy. And yes, you can also enjoy the hard and uncomfortable things about your job.You can train yourself to love hardship. But theres one condition You must believe in your work. Otherwise, you feel like its all a waste of time. The good news is that you give meaning to what you do.Pillar Three LifestyleIve tried different lifestyles Traveling for work, living in a big city, and living a quiet life. I like the last one best because it suits my personality and current goals. For example, if you dont like traveling- dont become a business consultant at a large firm. It sounds like common sense, but you would be surprised how many people hate the lifestyle that comes with their jobs.Dont like long hours? Dont work at a start-up. Its as simple as that. But you must be honest with yourself. Most of us tell ourselves all kinds of lies Ill get used to the two-hour commute. No, you wont.Hence, pick a job that fits your lifestyle. And thats different for each phase of life. When youre young, you dont mind living in a big city and going out all the time. How to Work Faster and More Efficiently

How to Work Faster and More EfficientlyHow to Work Faster and More EfficientlyWorking hard does not necessarily correlate with the number of hours you work, but has more to do with getting maximum results in as little time as is reasonably possible. Most of us have heard the clich work smarter, not harder, but this axiom carries its own weight if you think about what it is saying about work and results. Working smarter equates to getting good results with the least amount of wasted time and energy, but it does not mean you still wont have to work hard at something. Work Efficiently Prioritize work projects based on the amount of work involved as well as the scheduled due dates. Allow a sufficient amount of time for each project and pace yourself, so that you will produce a maximum of well-done work on time. Planning your work schedule wisely by knowing the amount of time each project will take to complete can decrease the amount of unproductive time you spend doing busy work, whi ch can be tiring with not much getting accomplished. Desktop and Work Space It is also important to have a clean workspace with everything organized properly on your desktop as well as your desk so information can be located easily. Hunting through stacks of paper and disorganized files for needed information can take hours. tischset aside time in your day to check that you have what you need to complete your assignments and make sure that all of your information is organized and easily accessible. Minimize Distractions When working on projects, try to minimize any distractions. This means lowering the ringer on your cell phone and storing it away from view. Also, turn off any other noise, such as television programs or music. Work in a quiet area that will allow you to focus on your tasks. Work Smartly When it comes to working productively, the degree of effort you make working on a project does not always mean that it will result in a quality product. Busy work is not necessarily efficient work. Tasks that take longer to complete because you are tired or distracted lack the proper tools, knowledge, or resources or are disorganized are a clear indication that you are working too hard. To be an efficient, productive worker means prioritizing your work and allowing sufficient time to do it correctly. Practicing good work habits will ensure positive, consistent results every time. The most important step you can take toward working more efficiently is to have a plan in place. Making a list and checking off items you have accomplished can help you work more effectively.
